So here is a battle with a Green Slime. A battle can so far begin from one of two possibilities. The first and most common way is when you walk up to a hostile creature or person, they will automatically engage in combat. You will no longer be able to walk around unless you choose to run away from the enemy. The other way is to begin combat yourself with a non-hostile NPC. In this game you can walk up to anybody and click the Attack button to engage combat with them.
I’m a big fan of Scott Johnson and everything he does over at myextralife.com. From his comics and blog to all of his podcasts, he just does great stuff! So I purchased myself a guest appearance in his comic for a measly $10.00 and here is the result!
Now, I’m not the best anime artist by any means. So I plan on doing a lot of practicing. This is just some examples of me trying to get the hair and eyes right. Girls tend to be the hardest to draw I find (Their hair and eyes, but mostly hair).
I’ve bought a lot of books on the subject and gone through quite a few tutorials. These were done on my break at work, without anything to look off of… Considering that, they aren’t that bad, are they?
Now that I think about it, I should post some of the books that I have bought on the subject. They could be of interest to you. I do have quite a few of them!
Obviously none of these girls will make it into the game, they are just examples of me trying to get the style down to perfection. Still have a long way to go.
If you know of any good tutorial sites or sites with awesome fantasy art, please let me know! The more I have bookmarked the better.
As promised, here is some more concept art… Another page ripped out of my sketch book. Here I was just running through some texture ideas I have (click the image for a larger view). The one I find particularly interesting is the skeletal walls. I had this idea of a dungeon that is made out of a massive burial ground of soldiers on ancient battle grounds. I can’t wait to see how this will look once I have it in 3D. As you can see from the sketch, I plan to have random arm’s, rib cages, etc… sticking out of the walls and ceiling. It should make for a pretty interesting dungeon.
I’ve been doing some concept sketching lately and thought I should share some so you get a good idea of my working process as I develop this beast. Oh, and by beast, I really do mean beast! This is going to be a very large RPG and I have it coded to be very nonlinear (more on that later). As for the concept art that I will be posting as time goes on, I just want you to know that it is exactly that, “concept”. Some of this will and will not make it into the game. These are all rough drafts and what will be made into the game I will spend more time on fleshing it out.
Once I got the conversation engine fully fleshed out I went on to developing more options in the scripting language to handle shops. Now you can walk up to a merchant and choose to make a purchase or sell an item. This screenshot shows an example of purchasing an item. In the 3d view window, all of the available items will be displayed. You can cycle through more “pages” of items by clicking the left and right arrows on the side. Also, when you hover the cursor over the item, it will give you a description of the item, show the cost, and if it is equip-able it will display how much it will increase your player’s stats over top of their avatar. Hey guys, just to add a little content to the site besides game development updates, I decided to start a little Retro Game Night. The plan is to hopefully play a little bit through an old NES game every week in an attempt to complete them. Here is my first attempt through the Legend of Zelda. Enjoy
